Paint protection film does most of the work protecting your car, but a little regular care keeps it clear, glossy, and performing for years. Here is a practical PPF maintenance guide for Los Angeles drivers.
Wash your car by hand with a pH-neutral car shampoo and a soft microfiber mitt using the two-bucket method. Rinse thoroughly before touching the film so loose dirt and sand do not scratch the surface. After washing, dry with a clean microfiber towel to prevent water spots.
Bird droppings, bug splatter, and tree sap contain acids that can etch a topcoat if left on the car. Remove them as soon as you notice them using a detailing spray and a soft microfiber cloth, or a gentle warm-water soak.
Many modern films self-heal. If you see light swirls or surface marks, pour warm water over the area or park the car in the sun for a while. Heat makes the topcoat flow back and the marks fade. Deep cuts that go through the film cannot self-heal and may need a professional patch.
Over time, apply a PPF-safe ceramic spray or detail sealant to keep water beading strong and make future washes easier. Check that the product is labeled safe for paint protection film.
Have the film inspected once a year by your installer. They can check edges, adhesion, and topcoat condition, and fix small issues before they become bigger ones.
Hand washing is always the safest option. If you use an automatic wash, choose a touchless one and keep regular distance-based rinsing in mind.
Traditional wax is not required and some contain solvents that can dull a film topcoat. Use a PPF-safe spray sealant or ceramic topper instead.
Follow your installer's curing instructions. In most cases you should wait about a week before the first hand wash to let the film settle.
